No real surprise here but CB Brian Kelly has apparently inked a three year deal with the Detroit Lions. The dollar amount has yet to be released but I’d expect it to be something like 6 to 8 million in guaranteed money. BK has been a mainstay since he was drafted in the second round of the ‘98 draft. He struggled his first few years but after the departure of Donnie Abraham in ‘02 he was thrust into the starting CB role along side Ronde Barber and made a name for himself. Though hampered by injuries the last couple of years BK’s absence really creates a problem in the secondary. Phillip Buchanon did very well filling in for Kelly last year but he may not be able to hold up the entire season. I would now expect the Bucs to look hard and heavy at the CB position in the draft now. By the way I’m not going to put this on Gruden as referenced in the Buc report today as he doesn’t mess with the defensive side of the ball. This was strictly Kelly going for more money later in his career and trying to get that last payday. It doesn’t appear to be anything foul on either side here, just a money thing. We’ll miss you BK, good luck in Detroit.
