Marinelli catching heat in Detroit
I know its not directly Buc related but according to Stephen Holder of the St. Pete Times the Lions are being questioned for bringing in formers Bucs. In an article by Rob Parker, who Holder says is his buddy, Parker is giving Lions head coach Rod Marinelli and defensive coordinator Joe Barry (both former Buc coaches) a hard time over them bringing in former Buc players to shore up the defense. The players brought in include Dwight Smith, Brian Kelly, Chartric Darby, Dewayne White and have offered contracts or brought in others to visit. I personally think Marinelli is doing everything possible to maintain his current position as head coach and I don’t think anyone does anything any different really. Every time Bill Parcells gets a job he brings in “Parcells guys” and so does every other coach in the league. If you’re trying to revamp a bad defense why would you not bring in guys who know your system and have played well in it before? This seems a little unreasonable of the Detroit reporter to expect him to do things differently than everyone else. I’ve always been a big fan of Rod Marinelli’s and it bothers me to see him getting attacked by people who continually run coaches out of town before they get a real opportunity to succeed. In todays NFL coaches have a short window to win and that’s why they look to familiar faces to help turn things around quickly. Gruden did it, Parcells did it, why shouldn’t Marinelli do it? Granted it doesn’t always work but what other way is there to fix a horrible team like the one in Detroit? Good luck Lions, if you run Rod out the next guy will do it and you’ll probably run him out too (and still be bad), in the meantime Matt Millen still has his job. Nice!
