Rays pick up Haynes, put Rocco on 60-day DL.
The Rays picked up career minor league outfielder Nathan Haynes today. Haynes had played parts of 11 seasons in the minors and is known as a decent outfielder with speed. No shocker here, I still think the Rays might make a push for Cubs outfielder Matt Murton though. The big not so surprising news is that Rocco Baldelli was put on the 60-day DL. Roc has been plagued by injuries the last few years and it doesn’t appear to getting any better. I spoke with a doctor friend of mine the other day and he thinks Baldelli has some form of Mitochondrial Myopathy, which to my understanding is a condition that develops in adulthood and causes extreme lack of fatigue by the muscles absorbing too much lactic acid. This makes the body tired after simple muscle exertion such as running or jogging and the patient feels as if they’ve spent hours working out. Sound familiar? There apparently is no cure for this and the treatments have minimal effects. Unfortunately Rocco’s career is probably over before it really got started. It’s a sad time for all involved with Rocco and I seriously hope he can recover some how. If not I’m sure he can coach or scout and stay in the game somehow.
