Hopkins, Calzaghe this Saturday on HBO.
I’m still working on some things with some local promoters with Boxing but this is a fight that absolutely needs to be seen. I’m no fan of Calzaghe after the beating he gave to one of my favorite hometown boys in Jeff Lacy but he’s without a doubt one of the best fighters I’ve seen in my lifetime. He has flown under the radar for most of his prolific career because he would only fight in Whales and didn’t get much attention on this side of the pond because of that. When he fought Lacy even most of his own fans were afraid of what big Jeff would do to him. After the fight even the hardest Lacy fans, myself included, had to acknowledge Calzaghe’s skills. Hopkins on the other end is a tough man who’s career can only be further steeped into the legendary folklore of boxing with a victory over Calzaghe. Hopkins has been in the spotlight most of his career and started to slow things down, he’s actually a retired boxer but we all no there’s no such thing outside Lennox Lewis, after his matches with Jermaine Taylor. His first bout with Taylor was one of the classic “robberies” we’re accustomed to seeing in boxing which has turned most people off to the great sport. Though a great fight there was no clear winner and there’s one of those unwritten rules that a champion doesn’t lose his title in a decision which still sticks with me. All of us in this area have seen such travesties with Winky Wright many times so I’m not trying to generate any sympathy for Hopkins, just pointing out some facts. Anyway, all in all I haven’t made a decision on who to root for here as I do like Hopkins and would like to see someone pay back Calzaghe for what he did to Lacy but if Calzaghe continues his dominance over the sports it makes things a little easier to swallow with the way he handled Lacy. Either way it will be a great fight and it’s not a pay-per-view event, it’s on HBO Saturday night. Smart move by boxing here by the way as they need to do something to try to keep up with the now extremely popular MMA propelling itself into the forefront. This is a must see fight so I encourage all to watch.
