Calzaghe outduels Hopkins.
This fight definitely lived up to the billing. Bernard Hopkins opened the fight with a bang knocking down Joe Calzaghe in the first round. Shortly after Calzaghe took the offensive and never looked back. It took Joe Calzaghe a couple rounds to get a handle on Hopkins borderline dirty tactics and style but once he figured him out he took to the aggressive and methodically broke down Hopkins. The surprising thing about this fight was the crowd was pro Calzaghe. Whales represented well in Las Vegas and Calzaghe played to the crowd and took the fight to Hopkins. Calzaghe won in a split decision and landed more punches against Bernard Hopkins than any other opponent in his legendary career. It was a great fight and Joe Calzaghe has now cemented himself in the history books as one of the greatest ever and could be the top pound for pound boxer in the game today. The fight that could determine Calzaghe’s current status is the Floyd Mayweather/Oscar De La Hoya bout on September 20th later this year. If Mayweather gets upset in the highly touted rematch there should be no doubt that Joe Calzaghe is the best pound for pound in the sport today. There will be more boxing news coming soon as our discussions are progressing but in the meantime we’ll keep you up to date on any major news within the world of boxing. Congrats Joe Calzaghe.
